NZ Super Payment Dates – May 2025

NZ Super payments are made every second Tuesday. For May 2025, your payments will arrive on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, 6 May 2025
  • Tuesday, 20 May 2025

Payments are made directly into your nominated bank account. If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, the payment may be made earlier, usually on the preceding working day.

NZ Super Eligibility Criteria (2025)

To receive NZ Super, you must meet several core eligibility requirements. These include:

  • Be aged 65 or older
  • Be a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold a residence class visa
  • Be ordinarily resident in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, or Tokelau at the time of application
  • Have lived in New Zealand for at least 10 years since turning 20, including 5 years since turning 50

However, a major update is coming into effect:

For individuals born on or after 1 July 1977, the residency requirement will gradually increase from 10 years to 20 years. This is being phased in progressively, so be sure to check your birth year and how the changes affect your future eligibility.

If you’ve lived or worked overseas, you may still qualify thanks to Social Security Agreements that New Zealand has with countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and others. These agreements may allow you to use time spent abroad to count toward the residency requirement.

NZ Super Payment Rates (Effective 1 April 2025)

NZ Super payments are adjusted annually based on inflation and wage growth. The new fortnightly after-tax rates (Tax Code M) effective from 1 April 2025 are:

  • Single, living alone: $1,076.84
  • Single, sharing accommodation: $994.00
  • Married or in a de facto relationship (both partners qualify): $828.34 each
  • Married or in a de facto relationship (only one partner qualifies): $828.34 for the qualifying person

Rates vary slightly depending on your tax code and whether you choose to include your partner in your payment if they don’t yet qualify

Winter Energy Payment – May to October 2025

The Winter Energy Payment is a seasonal top-up for people on NZ Super and other qualifying benefits to help cover heating costs during the colder months.

It is paid automatically from 1 May to 1 October 2025. The weekly amounts are:

  • $20.46 for single people
  • $31.82 for couples and people with dependent children

How to Apply for NZ Super Payment Coming May 2025?

You can apply for NZ Superannuation up to 12 weeks before your 65th birthday. Applying early ensures your payments begin promptly.

Here’s how to apply:

  1. Get a client number – If you haven’t interacted with Work and Income before, you’ll need a client number. This can be requested online.
  2. Register for MyMSD – Use your client number and contact details to register for the MyMSD portal.
  3. Complete your application – Log into MyMSD and complete the NZ Super application. Have ID and address documents ready.
  4. Submit supporting documents – Depending on your circumstances, you may need to upload proof of residence, identity, and financial status.
  5. Await confirmation – Once your application is processed, you’ll receive a letter confirming your eligibility and payment start date.

Overseas Pensions and Travel Considerations

If you’re receiving a pension from another country, it may affect your NZ Super payments.

New Zealand deducts certain overseas pensions under a policy called “direct deduction.” However, only 70% of your foreign pension may now be deducted, following recent changes. This means you may keep a greater portion of your total retirement income.

If you are planning to travel or live overseas, here’s what you should know:

  • Short trips (under 26 weeks) generally do not affect your NZ Super payments.
  • If you leave New Zealand for more than 26 weeks, you may need to inform Work and Income. Payments may stop unless you meet specific criteria.
  • NZ has portability agreements with several countries, meaning your NZ Super can still be paid if you move abroad permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I receive NZ Super while still working?
Yes, NZ Super is not income-tested. You can keep working full-time or part-time and still receive payments. However, your tax rate may change depending on your total income.

Does NZ Super count as taxable income?
Yes, NZ Super is taxable income. It is taxed at source, meaning the amount you receive is after-tax. Make sure your tax code is correct.

Can my partner get NZ Super if they’re under 65?
In some cases, yes. If you’re receiving NZ Super and your partner is under 65, you can choose to include them in your payments. This is called a non-qualified partner inclusion, but it may reduce the overall amount.

Do I have to reapply for NZ Super each year?
No. Once you’re approved, NZ Super payments continue as long as you remain eligible. You must, however, inform Work and Income if your circumstances change (e.g., you move overseas or your relationship status changes).

What if I apply after my 65th birthday?
If you apply late, you won’t be back-paid to your 65th birthday. Payments only begin from the date of application, so apply early.
